SLIPKNOT drummer, Joey Jordison, came to the rescue of METALLICA at last night’s Download Festival when drummer, Lars Ulrich, was hospitalized due to a medical emergency. METALLICA, reluctant to cancel on the 72,000 fans packed into Donington Park, decided to go ahead with the show with the help of their stick-wielding friend in SLIPKNOT. After a frenzied backstage rehearsal, Jordison stepped up to the plate to create a piece of rock history.
SLAYER’s Dave Lombardo also answered the call, opening the show with “Battery” and “The Four Horsemen.” Jordison then laid out “For Whom The Bell Tolls,” “Creeping Death” and “Seek and Destroy.” After taking a break for Lars’ longtime drum tech, Flemming Larsen, to take the sticks for “Fade To Black,” Jordison returned to nail five more classic tracks from METALLICA’s catalog and close out a very special show.
The night was something both the fans, Joey and the METALLICA guys will remember for a long time to come. Jordison comments, “It has been incredible touring with our idols, METALLICA. It was an honor last night to play for a band I’ve looked up to for so long. I could not imagine getting into the seat of one of my heroes. It was one of the best experiences of my life.”
